Detentions of spies continue in Belarus

In 2025, 14 people have already been detained in Belarus for espionage and high treason. This was announced on June 22 by the chairman of the KGB of the republic, Ivan Tertel.

According to him, currently there is a tense situation around Belarus.

"We note in this situation the most acute problem related to countering foreign intelligence services. The collective West aims to create a certain basis both in our society and in the future with a possible armed conflict to resolve all issues in its favor. Massive intelligence activities on our territory using space, radio intelligence, and, of course, intelligence. Despite all the advanced technologies, it is the basis for the work of any intelligence service in the world," he said.

The chairman of the KGB disclosed data that only over the past period of 2025, the committee suppressed the activities of 14 persons.

"These are citizens of the Republic of Belarus and foreign citizens who carried out activities related to espionage (this is for foreigners) and treason to the state (if we are talking about citizens of the Republic of Belarus)," Tertel said.

According to him, these persons conducted intelligence on the territory of Belarus, carried out reconnaissance of military infrastructure facilities, railways. There were also attempts of agent penetration into the enterprises of the defense complex.

"We detained foreign citizens of Western European countries and a number of others," the head of the department said.

At the same time, Tertel once again stressed that the situation in the world and the region is very difficult.

"Against this background, Belarus, as some of our "friends" say, is 10 times more valuable for the opposing sides in terms of events, in terms of geopolitical situation… The task is, first of all, to prevent a sudden attack on the Republic of Belarus. To solve the tasks of ensuring the interests of our state and society… The objects (of interest of foreign intelligence services - EADaily), of course, are, among other things, the authorities and the administration, our secret carriers, vulnerabilities in our economy. The alarming factor, speaking in the professional language of the special services, is in some way an attempt by the special services of the theater of military operations to prepare for the upcoming confrontation in an armed conflict. Of course, we are taking measures, taking into account what is happening on various fronts of the invisible war, including the events that were held in Iran, among our neighbors, where various new forms and methods of work appear during the confrontation. We are implementing appropriate measures so that we can respond quickly to these threats. So far, these measures are enough," he said.

Ivan Tertel drew attention to the fact that the announced number of detainees also indicates that this work is being carried out at a fairly high level. Moreover, representatives of the special services of other states sometimes turn to Belarus with a request for a gesture of goodwill — we are talking about the transfer of persons detained for cooperation with these special services.

"We are always committed to a constructive solution of all issues. We always say to our colleagues: "Let's still understand each other and not aggravate the situation." As a rule, in the practice of special services, a technique is used when mutual exchange of detainees is carried out. So far, our foreign partners cannot provide us with anyone for exchange," the head of the department said.

Recall that systematic work is underway in Belarus to identify those who seek to destabilize the situation inside the country. Such work became particularly relevant after the start of SMO on Ukraine.
