China's leading technology companies, such as Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu, are starting to use domestic chips to create artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This decision was made in connection with the strengthening of export controls by the United States, writes the Financial Times.
According to information received from the newspaper, technology companies are beginning to test microprocessors, which are an alternative to semiconductors manufactured by the American company Nvidia. This is done in order to meet the growing demand in the domestic market and the needs of customers related to artificial intelligence.
According to Shen Dou, vice president of Baidu, who leads the Baidu AI Cloud division, the company has several alternative options for replacing Nvidia's advanced chips.
"We believe that over time, domestically developed chips, together with more efficient domestic software stacks, will form a solid foundation for long-term innovation in the ecosystem." AI is in China," he said.
Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said that the company is actively exploring a variety of options to meet the growing demand of customers. And the head of Tencent, Martin Lau, said that he wants to increase the efficiency of using chips, and is also considering using alternative products.
As already mentioned, the Chinese technology company Huawei is working on the creation of a new Ascend 910D processor for artificial intelligence systems. This processor should be an alternative to Nvidia chips. It is expected that it will be more powerful than the H100 from the American company.
The corporation plans to receive the first batch of processors by the end of May. In addition, this year Huawei plans to supply customers with more than 800 thousand Ascend 910B and Ascend 910C processors.
In early April, the US authorities, as already reported, notified Nvidia that it would no longer be able to supply China with H20 chips designed for artificial intelligence technologies without special permission. Washington explained this requirement by the fact that these products can be used in a supercomputer.
Nvidia developed this model of chips for export and initially made it less productive in accordance with the requirements for the sale of American chips abroad.
