Russian Washington Capitals striker Alexander Ovechkin in the last match of the NHL regular season repeated Gordie Howe's 1969 record for goals per season among players aged 39 and older. Ovechkin scored a goal in a match with the Pittsburgh Penguins and brought the number of his goals this season to 44.
Howe scored 44 goals for the Detroit Red Wings in the 1968/69 season.
Ovechkin scored his 895th NHL goal on April 6 and broke Wayne Gretzky's record for career goals in the league.
In the first round of the playoffs, Washington will play with the Montreal Canadiens.
