Ovechkin scored a goal in a match with the Pittsburgh Penguins and brought the number of his goals this season to 44.
Howe scored 44 goals for the Detroit Red Wings in the 1968/69 season.
Ovechkin scored his 895th NHL goal on April 6 and broke Wayne Gretzky's record for career goals in the league.
