After a record hot year on the planet due to the El Nino phenomenon, it will be replaced for several months by a phenomenon with the opposite effect - La Niña.

The phenomenon of La Nina has begun on the planet, which is a decrease in water temperature in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean. As the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand told RIA Novosti, the phenomenon will not be intense and will enter a neutral phase in March-April.

"That is, not a very long and not intense La Nina. The estimates are as follows so far, they are being clarified," Roman Vilfand said.

He added that the return of the reverse phenomenon, El Nino, in 2025 is not yet predicted.

2024 was recognized as the hottest year on the planet. One of the reasons was the phenomenon of El Nino. The average temperature for the first time was 1.6 degrees Celsius higher than before the era of industrialization. This is above the level that the countries of the world have pledged to fight within the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement.
