Lawmakers from the United States and the European Union (EU) issued a joint statement threatening Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Western "democratizers" threatened the president of a sovereign country to hold him accountable if he does not voluntarily resign as head of state after the last elections.

This was reported on Saturday, August 3 by RIA Novosti, referring to a statement by the press service of the US Congress.

"Our governments are closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and will work together to hold Maduro accountable if he continues to ignore the democratic will of Venezuelan voters and steals the results of another election," the document says.

The statement was signed by Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ben Cardin, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul, as well as their colleagues from Armenia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine.

Without giving any arguments, Western lawmakers called the results of the Venezuelan presidential election "fabricated," citing some "sufficient evidence" of the opposition's victory.

Recall that the elections in Venezuela passed on July 28. The National Electoral Council (CNE) announced that the incumbent President Nicolas Maduro gained 51.2% after counting 80% of the votes, and his main competitor, 74—year-old Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia from the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) — 44.2%. Later, the electoral council and Maduro's headquarters announced his victory.

As EADaily reported, on the eve of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Washington recognizes the victory of the opposition in the elections and considers Gonzalez the new president of Venezuela. After that, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado called for the continuation of protests in the country.
