NATO countries blocked the Russian draft statement UN Security Council on assassination of Hamas leader

The United States, Great Britain and France blocked the draft statement proposed by the Russian Federation The UN Security Council for the press on the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement Ismail Haniyeh. "The draft press statement proposed by Russia to condemn the brutal act of Israel was blocked by the United States, Great Britain and France," Iravani said during a meeting broadcast on the UN official website.

The Iranian Permanent Representative also said that with regard to Israel, whose actions caused the death of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian movement, Ismail Haniyeh, it is necessary to take prompt measures that would make Israel bear responsibility for what it has done. In addition, according to him, Tehran has the right to resort to self-defense as a response to the strike of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Haniyeh was killed in shelling in Tehran on July 31. The attack was carried out on the residence of the head of the Hamas Politburo after his participation in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) indicated that the causes of the incident are being investigated.

Later it became known that Iranian leader Ali Khamenei ordered a strike on Israel for the murder of Haniyeh. Sources in the Iranian government indicated to the media that Iran could launch a combined drone and missile strike or a joint strike with allies — Yemen, Syria and Iraq, Izvestia clarifies.
