In order to improve relations between Poland and Belarus, Minsk must fulfill a number of conditions previously announced by Warsaw. This was announced today, July 18, by the press secretary of the Polish Foreign Ministry Pavel Vronsky.
Speaking about the possible normalization of relations with Belarus, the official representative of the Polish Foreign Ministry stressed that Warsaw is waiting for the "first real step" from the Belarusian side. In this regard, he recalled the position of the official Warsaw regarding the journalist Andrzej Poczobut, who is imprisoned in Belarus.
In addition, referring to the issue of possible progress in Polish-Belarusian relations, Vronsky recalled that Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski "set conditions here earlier, they are clear and still in effect." According to him, Warsaw expects the Belarusian side to improve the situation at the border and extradite a migrant who fatally wounded a Polish serviceman in June.
Recall that relations between Minsk and Warsaw deteriorated sharply after the presidential elections in Belarus in August 2020. Then the Polish side supported the Belarusian opposition, including in its attempts to organize a coup in the republic. Minsk has repeatedly offered Warsaw to sit down at the negotiating table, but in response received only ultimatums. In mid-July, Alexander Lukashenko recalled that he had offered both Poland and Lithuania to resolve controversial issues, but did not see a response. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov also said that an official proposal had been sent to the Polish side to send its specialists to jointly assess the situation on the common border.
