The West Nile virus is actively spreading in Berlin. This is evidenced by the results of a study by scientists at the Berlin clinic "Charite", the Bild newspaper reports.
"The dangerous West Nile virus, which previously could only be found in the southern regions, seems to have settled in the German capital seriously and for a long time. This is the conclusion reached by scientists of the Berlin clinic "Charite". They caught and examined 24 thousand mosquitoes: it turned out that in 2023 up to 6% of these insects were carriers of the pathogen. Such indicators are comparable to data from Southern Europe, where this virus regularly causes diseases," the publication says.
The greatest danger, as it turned out, lies not in nature reserves, but in crowded places — in parks, cemeteries, garden plots. It is there that the most infected mosquitoes are found. According to scientists, certain bird species living in these zones apparently play a key role in the spread of the virus.
It is noted that the majority of those infected with the disease are asymptomatic, but about one in five have flu-like symptoms. And for 1%, the virus is really dangerous, because it leads to the development of meningitis. The elderly are at particular risk.
"A large number of cases remain unaccounted for. According to virologists, the number of infected in Berlin may be at least 100 times higher. It is expected that due to climate change, the number of cases will continue to grow, " the publication summarizes.
As reported by EADaily, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on a declassified package of documents on the activities of US-funded biolabs on Ukraine.
The documents were published on June 12 at the direction of the head of the US National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has already resigned and will officially resign on June 30.
