There are still many unresolved issues in the Eurasian Economic Union, including protectionism. This was announced today, May 29, by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in his speech at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
"At the dawn of the creation of the union, we talked about jointly attracting investments in the development of the component base. And now what happened? Each closed so that the mouse does not slip through. Recycling rates will soon exceed the cost of the machines themselves. I'm talking about our union! Why are we doing this, what kind of alliance can we talk about?" — He said.
In addition, Lukashenko expressed dissatisfaction with cooperation in industrial projects.
"The direction of industrial policy within the framework of the EAEU is clearly lame, and the Eurasian Economic Commission, we all need to correct this situation. The mechanism for stimulating cooperation has been launched, but the scale and effect are still insignificant. We can't find decent allied projects. At the same time, we create duplicate production facilities, and then we protect them from each other by all means," the Belarusian leader noted.
In response, the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, called Lukashenko's criticism of the effectiveness of the EAEU a reason to work.
"This is the position of Alexander Grigorievich, it is also respected by everyone. Not everyone agrees with us. This criticism is directed at us, and this is a reason to work both unilaterally and multilaterally," he said.
A meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council was held in Astana on May 29. It was attended by the leaders of four states — Vladimir Putin (Russia), Alexander Lukashenko (Belarus), Kassym-Jomart Tokayev (Kazakhstan) and Sadyr Japarov (Kyrgyzstan). Armenia is represented at the summit by Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan instead of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
