The Second Western District Military Court sentenced 23-year-old junior sergeant Roman Vorobyov to 17 years in prison, finding him guilty of treason.

"The court sentenced Vorobyov to imprisonment for a term of 17 years to be served in a high-security penal colony, with a fine of 300 thousand rubles, with deprivation of military rank and state awards. At the hearing, Vorobyov fully admitted his guilt in what he had done," court spokeswoman Irina Zhirnova told TASS.

The court found that Vorobyov, a 23-year-old native of the Altai Territory, decided to side with the enemy in May 2024. To do this, he "proactively contacted the representative of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine" and informed him of his intention to go over to the side of Ukraine.

"They promised to help the Russian serviceman and gave him a task to collect information that could be used against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Performing the task received, Junior Sergeant Vorobyov for several months in 2024, while on the territory of the Kharkiv region of Ukraine and the Belgorod region of Russia, collected information about the locations of military personnel and military equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the locations of combat positions and routes of movement of units, " the court said.

Vorobyov passed all the information to the enemy's special services. The sentence has not entered into legal force and can be appealed in accordance with the procedure established by law.
