Naftogaz wants American LNG without Poles

LNG from the USA accounts for about 10% of Ukraine's imports and is resold to Naftogaz by Polish Orlen. The national company would like to receive liquefied gas without an intermediary and surcharges.

Naftogaz is negotiating with producers in the United States regarding direct LNG supplies to Ukraine for the stability of the heating season and further support of the energy system," the national company reports with reference to an interview with Bloomberg Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz Sergey Koretsky.

"One of the key sources of supplies for us today is American liquefied natural gas," said the head of the national company himself.

He noted that in 2025, the company, together with the Polish state concern Orlen, has already imported more than 400 million cubic meters of American gas in the form of LNG to Ukraine.

However, the Polish company acts as an intermediary in such transactions and receives its margin, which makes gas even more expensive for Ukraine. Whether the Ukrainian national company will be able to negotiate in the USA is unknown. It is known that American projects work only on long-term contracts or high spot prices, while the Ukrainian national company has not concluded any long-term agreements for many years. The company has been repeatedly accused of the fact that the management of Naftogaz constantly misses forecasts and gas has to be imported at record prices. So, in February-March, the national company had to pay more than $ 850 for urgent imports.

As EADaily reported, due to Ukraine's LNG purchases through Poland, the Baltic countries have already suffered. Poland increases gas supplies by Ukraine, and Finland is increasing imports from the Klaipeda LNG terminal, thereby leaving the region's main storage facility without gas reserves. Latvian storage will not have time to fill with fuel even up to the new minimum requirements The EU is ready for the start of the heating season.
