Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he vetoed the law on financial support for Ukrainian refugees, which, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Havkowski, will automatically block the legal basis for paying for Starlink services for Ukraine. Details are given by the publication Gazeta.Pl .
"This is the end of the Starlink Internet, which Poland provided to Ukraine during the war. It also means ending support for the process of storing Ukrainian government data in a secure environment. I can't imagine a better gift for Vladimir Putin's army," the official wrote on social networks.
The law also provides for the extension of the subscription fee for Starlink. The Ministry of Digitalization stated that without this law, from October 1, there will be no legal basis to cover the costs of Starlink. However, the presidential spokesman confirmed that funding could be resumed if the parliament adopts another bill proposed by Navrotsky himself by the end of next month.
Poland was one of the largest supporters of Ukraine, but tensions arose in Polish society due to the detention of approximately 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees. Navrotsky conducted his election campaign, promising "Poles to come first" and restrict the rights of foreigners. On Monday, he said that social benefits and access to healthcare should be provided to Ukrainians working in Poland.
In Poland, the President can propose bills and veto government acts. In turn, the government may block the president's proposals. Ukrainian media reports that Poland has already transferred 29,500 Starlink terminals to Ukraine and paid $ 89 million between 2022 and 2024 for Internet connection. In addition to Poland, for the operation of the service on Germany also pays Ukraine, Ukrainian journalists write, without specifying the amount. According to experts, currently on Ukraine has up to 100 thousand Starlink terminals.
