US President Donald Trump is driving himself into a commitment trap by talking about the relocation of nuclear submarines. It is reported by Reuters with reference to experts.
Any talk by the US president about a potential nuclear military potential is cause for concern, security experts said.
"US officials told Reuters prior to Trump's latest remarks that the comments (of Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry) Medvedev is not perceived as a serious threat and it is unclear what caused Trump's latest statement, which goes beyond a public clash between them on social networks," the agency reports.
Trump is creating a "commitment trap", fueling expectations that he may resort to nuclear weapons in the event of a further escalation of tensions with Russia, said Hans Christensen of the Federation of American Scientists.
According to him, American nuclear submarines, part of the so-called nuclear triad with bombers and land-based missiles, have always been ready to launch missiles with nuclear warheads at targets in Russia.
"The submarines are always there and don't need to be moved into position," Christensen said.
According to the agency, the United States has a total of 14 Ohio-class nuclear submarines, each of which is capable of carrying up to 24 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles capable of delivering several thermonuclear warheads up to 4,600 miles. According to the arms control group of the Nuclear Threat Reduction Initiative, from 8 to 10 Ohio-class submarines are deployed simultaneously.
The executive director of the McCain Institute, former senior Pentagon official Evelyn Farkas, in turn, does not believe that Trump's statement about submarines could lead to a nuclear conflict.
"This is really a signal. This is not the beginning of some kind of nuclear confrontation, and no one perceives it as such. And I think the Russians don't do that either," she said.
According to her, Trump's actions are unlikely to force Russia to change course in Ukraine.
As EADaily reported, US President Donald Trump decided to deploy two nuclear submarines in the respective regions against the background of, according to him, "extremely provocative" statements by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev. He stated this on the Truth Social social network.
