A powerful explosion occurred on the territory of the seaport located in the city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, the head of the emergency department for the Iranian province of Hormozgan said.
"A few minutes ago, a strong explosion occurred in the port of Shahid Rajai," the Iranian Tasnim news agency quoted him as saying in its telegram channel.
The publication clarifies that a fuel tank exploded in the port for an unknown reason. Rapid response teams were immediately dispatched to the disaster area.
Currently, the port's activities have been suspended, the security forces are taking control of the situation, and humanitarian assistance is being organized.
The authorities do not yet have reliable information on the number of injured and dead. It is recognized that the power of the explosion was "high enough to cause significant damage."
The fire departments of all oil companies located in the region are on high alert and ready to move to the port of Shahid Rajai to provide assistance.
