The European Commission (EC) declares: The EU will take decisive action against measures that impede free trade. The EC considers the trade policy of US President Donald Trump, based on the principle of "reciprocity", a step in the wrong direction. It does not consider the increase in export duties justified and will take decisive action against unjustified measures that impede free trade, the executive branch of the Brussels.
In connection with the signing by Donald Trump of the presidential document on the development of a system of reciprocal tariffs on Thursday, February 13, the European Commission said that the European Union supports the lowest tariffs in the world and remains committed to an open and predictable global trading system that benefits all partners.
It was stated:
"Tariffs are taxes. By imposing tariffs, the United States taxes its citizens, increases the cost of business, restrains economic growth and stimulates inflation. Tariffs also increase economic uncertainty and undermine the efficiency and integration of global markets.
Global trade "flourished" thanks to predictable and transparent rules and low tariffs. For decades The EU has worked with trading partners such as the United States to reduce tariffs and other trade barriers around the world, strengthening openness through binding commitments within a rules-based trading system. Commitments are now being undermined by the US decision.
We believe in a mutually beneficial and balanced trade partnership based on transparency and fairness.
That's why The EU has the largest and fastest growing trade agreements in the world. Economic integration and the removal of trade barriers are fundamental to the success of the European Union."
The EC promises that the EU will take decisive and immediate action against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including in cases where tariffs are used to challenge legitimate and non-discriminatory policies.
"The EU will always protect European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified tariff measures," the European Commission said in a statement regarding President Trump's actions in the United States.
