The European Commission (EC) declares: The EU will take decisive action against measures that impede free trade. "Tariffs are taxes. By imposing tariffs, the United States taxes its citizens, increases the cost of business, restrains economic growth and stimulates inflation. Tariffs also increase economic uncertainty and undermine the efficiency and integration of global markets.

Global trade "flourished" thanks to predictable and transparent rules and low tariffs. For decades The EU has worked with trading partners such as the United States to reduce tariffs and other trade barriers around the world, strengthening openness through binding commitments within a rules-based trading system. Commitments are now being undermined by the US decision.

The EC promises that the EU will take decisive and immediate action against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including in cases where tariffs are used to challenge legitimate and non-discriminatory policies.

"The EU will always protect European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified tariff measures," the European Commission said in a statement regarding President Trump's actions in the United States.
