The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan will close the Academy of Sciences, which was chaired by former President of the Republic Nursultan Nazarbayev and his relatives. This was announced at a briefing for journalists by the head of the department, Sayasat Nurbek.
Currently, the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan includes Nursultan Nazarbayev, his daughter Dinara and her husband Timur Kulibayev, as well as others close to the family of the ex-president.
Nurbek said that last year, President Tokayev proposed the creation of a new academy of sciences, which already includes nine scientists.
"The old academy, which includes all these people (Nazarbayev and his relatives. — Approx. EADaily), has existed since the beginning of the noughties. Last year, by the decision of the president, a new Academy of Sciences was created, but with a different status — under the president (state funding). The first elections have already been held. Nine academicians have already been elected," the minister said.
Accordingly, the status of members of the old Academy of Sciences, according to the head of the department, has been reset.
"Thus, Nazarbayev and his relatives are no longer academics," Nurbek concluded.
