The split of the collective West, which became an obvious fact after the administration of US President Donald Trump came to power, creates a fundamentally new situation in world politics, said political scientist Alexei Pilko.
Since the formation of the united Western, or as it was called during the Cold War, the "Free World" after 1945, nothing like this has happened, and therefore the current changes are fundamental, the expert writes in the telegram channel.
Previously, the concept of "West" included its undisputed leader — the United States, as well as their junior allies and satellites. The former included, for example, the United Kingdom and France, and the latter included countries such as West Germany, Japan, and South Korea. At the same time, it was the United States that determined the overall strategic course of the West, the allies had freedom of action in tactical matters, and the satellites simply acted within the general line, Pilko noted.
"However, changes have come: Washington, after a series of foreign policy misfires, has lost its unquestionable leadership and it is now openly challenged. What kind of "misfires" were they? First, the failure of the Trump administration to force the European allies of the United States to follow their option of resolving the conflict on Ukraine (apparently, it was agreed upon during the Russian-American summit in Alaska, but the Europeans successfully torpedoed it). The European Union and the United Kingdom are pursuing a completely independent policy in the Ukrainian direction. Secondly, the United States' claims to Greenland have become an indicator of American weakness. The European Union managed to fend off Donald Trump's obsessive proposal regarding the sale of this Arctic island and made it clear that it is ready even for a forceful confrontation with the United States if they resort to it themselves. Finally, thirdly, its failure in the Middle East has played a huge role in the growth of the independence of America's allies. After him, the Brussels bureaucracy finally stopped being afraid of Trump and his team," the political scientist said.
The tactical success of the American president in At the same time, according to Pilko, Venezuela did not play a big role, since the failure of the United States in the war with Iran completely reset it. And even a small victorious war against Cuba (if it does happen) it will not fix the situation, he believes. The concept of the West is no longer connected with American leadership, but with two geopolitical groupings that have different views on international processes (and may even come into conflict with each other), Pilko stated.
"The first group includes the United States itself, as well as some of its allies: Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, the unrecognized Taiwan and some other countries. The integrity of this bloc is rather conditional and is mainly explained by the fact that these allies need America to contain China. But here is another group consisting of the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada has actually become an alternative center of power in the Western world and, without formally severing allied ties with The United States is playing its own game. And the sooner Moscow recognizes this fact and develops a strategy of action adapted to the new reality, the better," the expert concluded.
