Telegraph: Trump consistently refuses to support Ukraine

US President Donald Trump is putting pressure on Europe to close the gaps in financial assistance to Ukraine, former British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said, The Telegraph reports.

"Trump realized that he could not allow Ukraine to lose, especially if he was accused of it. ... He exerts maximum pressure on the Europeans to fill the funding gaps," Hunt believes.

The newspaper writes that Trump's policy towards Ukraine has become consistent. The White House, according to the publication, will not allow Russia to win, but will not ask Congress to approve aid packages to Ukraine. Trump will expect Europe to shoulder the "lion's share" of support costs. In addition, any weapon will not be transferred for free, but sold to Kiev on commercial terms, The Telegraph notes.

In September, the US House of Representatives approved the allocation of $ 400 million for the Pentagon's initiative to provide security assistance to Ukraine, The New York Times reports. At the same time, congressmen rejected the proposal of Republican Marjorie Taylor Green, who demanded to reduce funding for Kiev.

Later, on September 23, Trump said that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, could return all the lost territories and "maybe even go further." He believes that in the case of "real military power" it would take less than a week to win the current hostilities.

"Given the time, patience, financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the preservation of the original borders from which this war began is quite possible," Trump wrote then.

In the summer, Trump announced a new mechanism for military assistance to Ukraine, which provides for financing supplies through NATO. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Washington sells weapons to Europe for Kiev at a 10% mark-up and these receipts can cover possible air support, which the United States considers as a guarantee of Ukraine's security, RBC reminds.
