Former head of the Central Bank of Canada Mark Carney on Monday was elected the new leader of the ruling liberal party. After the resignation of Justin Trudeau, he will become the new prime minister of the country, follows from a party statement on the social network X.
"We present our new liberal leader Mark Carney!" the party said after a closed vote of its members took place on Sunday.
Carney is considered a talented economist who was able to save the Canadian economy from collapse in the 2008 financial crisis. Merits in this post allowed him to later become the first head of the Bank of England, who was born outside the United Kingdom. He served in this post until 2020, and then was appointed UN Special envoy on issues related to climate change and finance.
