Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree appointing Valery Zaluzhny, Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK, as the country's permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization concurrently. The text of the decree is published on the official website of the Ukrainian leader.
"To appoint Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Valeriy Zaluzhny is the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) concurrently in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland," the document says.
The International Maritime Organization (International Maritime Organization) is a specialized UN agency responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international navigation, as well as for preventing pollution of the seas by ships. The organization deals with legal issues, including liability, compensation and facilitation of international maritime transport. The IMO was established as a result of the adoption of the Convention under the auspices of the UN in Geneva on March 6, 1948 and held its first meeting in January 1959.
The former head of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Zaluzhny, has been the Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK since March 7, 2024.
Zaluzhny has been the head of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2021 and led the army at the beginning of the Russian military operation. In February 2024, he left the post, and Zelensky thanked him "for two years of protection." Alexander Syrsky, who previously commanded the Ground Forces of Ukraine, became the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko criticized the dismissal of the commander-in-chief, stating that the country should unite around the leaders who enjoy the greatest support of society, reminds RBC.
