The head of the Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE) of the United States, American entrepreneur Elon Musk, said that the country's Ministry of Finance annually pays $ 100 billion to unidentified persons.
"Yesterday I was informed that currently more than $100 billion a year is paid to persons who do not have either a social individual code or even a temporary identification number. If this is true, then this is extremely suspicious," Musk wrote on his page on the social network X.
As the businessman noted, when asked what percentage of these payments is a "clear and obvious" fraud, the Ministry of Finance said that it was about $ 50 billion a year, or one billion dollars a week.
According to Musk, representatives of DOGE and the US Treasury came to the conclusion that in the future all government payments should be classified for financial audits, and the need to pay any payment should be justified. At the same time, it was established that the list of entities unavailable for payment, including fraudulent organizations and persons associated with terrorist groups, should also be updated at least once a week.
Earlier, the current US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the federal spending of the US government has reached an unprecedented level in peacetime, and the budget deficit is 6.8−7% of GDP. He called the current state of US financial policy "out of control" and expressed concern about the possible consequences.
