Russian President Vladimir Putin will not use nuclear weapons against the West. This is the opinion in an interview with the Polish portal Niezalezna.pl The former NATO Secretary General (1999-2003) George Robertson, who took part in the 60th Security Conference in Oslo, expressed his opinion.
When asked by a journalist whether Russia will use nuclear weapons against NATO, the ex-secretary General said:
"I don't see that possibility. They will threaten, they will try to use it as blackmail, but the use of nuclear weapons means crossing the threshold. I think that would mean a change and an escalation that goes beyond Russia's interests. Vladimir Putin knows that any use of nuclear weapons will provoke a massive response with the use of conventional, and possibly nuclear weapons. That's why I think they won't do it."
In addition, according to Robertson, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping allegedly warned Vladimir Putin that he should not use nuclear weapons, even low-power tactical nuclear weapons.
Also, the former NATO Secretary General believes that Donald Trump's return to the White House will not affect Western support for Ukraine.
"No, NATO's obligations to Ukraine are absolute and very important, as are the UK's obligations. We believe that Ukrainians are fighting for us and for themselves today. And they will continue to receive our support," said George Robertson.
