Commemorative events on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp were opened today by Polish President Andrzej Duda, as reported by the Polsat TV channel.
"Today, here in Auschwitz, on the territory of the museum, where the German concentration camp was once located, ceremonies will be held in memory of people of different nationalities - Jews, Poles, Russians, Gypsies," Duda said, quoted by Interfax.
The Polish president called the current generation "keepers of memory," noting that "Poland cares about such memorial sites so that the memory does not fade, so that thanks to this memory the world will never again allow such a human catastrophe to happen again."
According to the director of the Auschwitz Memorial complex, Pyotr Tsyvinsky, about 50 former prisoners of German concentration camps are participating in commemorative events this year.
It is noted that delegations from abroad also arrived at the ceremony, including the leaders of a number of European countries - King Charles III of Great Britain, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Recall that Russia was not invited to the ceremony.
