The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan presented a base in Almaty, where a tent city will be set up in the event of a devastating earthquake. This is reported by zakon.kz .
As Vice-Minister of Emergency Situations Kegen Tursynbayev told the Parliament of the republic, the southern base "Alatau" was transferred to the Ministry of Emergency Situations from the Ministry of Defense in January 2024. It is located in the northern (lower) part of Almaty.
"The uniqueness of this site is that the ex-Soviet base has a runway for aviation and a platform for helicopters. This is a plateau, there are no faults, in the event of an earthquake no one will be hurt. A camp for the affected population will be deployed there and the republican operational headquarters will work," he said.
The Vice Minister added that a railway line is located 500-600 meters from the base. The republican highway and one of the major city avenues run nearby.
"The base will have beds for 15 thousand people. And if we consider it as a gathering place, then, if necessary, up to 50 thousand people can fit. This is not the only place. Many people think that the whole city will gather there, but in fact this is only the primary place for gathering. A mobile field hospital will be deployed there," Tursynbayev concluded.
