President of Syria Bashar al-Assad has asked the Russian leadership for military assistance, head of the Russian presidential administration Sergey Ivanov said.
As he put it, it is necessary to join forces in combatting terrorism, while observing the international law. Russia’s partners will be informed today on a decision about using military forces in Syria, he said.
Ivanov announced that the key task of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria will be supporting from the air the Syrian army in its fight against ISIL terrorists. All social and financial issues related to maintaining the Russian military operation in the Middle East will be observed, Ivanov said.
The Federation Council has unanimously supported the idea of a military operation in Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted the initiative to the council earlier.
