The American outback is turning into a dump for chips worth $ 700 billion, writes the telegram channel Lomovka.

Large technology companies are investing hundreds of billions in data centers for AI, but rural America is paying for it with ecology, the author of the channel writes. Chips last only 3-6 years, after which they are sent to the landfill.

"As soon as Blackwell enters the market, the previous generation Hopper will become useless," said Nvidia co—founder Jensen Huang.

Meta, Alphabet and Microsoft artificially increase the amortization time of servers to 5.5−6 years, saving billions, but the equipment physically wears out faster.

It is noted that 67% of new data centers are being built on former farmland. More than 100 communities in 12 states tried to block their construction.

"Electricity tariffs in the United States have increased by 32% in five years. This model requires endless construction and replacement, and rural America is paying the price," the publication says.
