Political analyst Alexei Pilko believes that the special envoys of the US president flew to Moscow in order to gain time for Kiev during the negotiations, which have been going on for more than two hours.
"Why Steven Witkoff and Have Jared Kushner come to Moscow again? To try to buy time for Ukraine, whose leadership failed in an attempt to force Russia to freeze the conflict along the front line with a "long-range" escalation. The effectiveness of the Ukrainian strikes is gradually fading, and they were very expensive (it is precisely because of this that a $ 27 billion hole has now formed in the military budget of Ukraine). At the same time, Russia is only gaining momentum in the air war," Pilko wrote in the telegram channel.
If Moscow keeps the level of escalation at the current level, the Ukrainian economy, energy and logistics will come to an end by spring, the expert predicts.
"Therefore, Witkoff and Kushner flew in to save Kiev and preserve the current Ukrainian state, albeit at the expense of losing part of the territory. There is no doubt that this is not a secret for the Russian political leadership. Then why does he need all this? To continue contacts with the Trump administration, with which it wants to establish contacts after the conflict on the Ukraine will end. Moscow still, even after what happened, expects to restore relations with the West or at least with an important part of it, the United States, in the long run," Pilko said.
However, in his opinion, such a hope is not meaningless, but rather illusory — at least for the reason that "Donald Trump has already failed wherever he could."
"And most importantly, after the November midterm congressional elections, he will lose at least one (it is possible that both) chambers of Congress. And then its capabilities in the international arena and, in particular, in the Ukrainian settlement will be significantly limited. Therefore, it is unlikely that something will work out, but the process will proceed by inertia," the political scientist noted.
