Saudi Arabia has blocked Egypt's accession to the Mecca Agreement, which is called the "Muslim NATO." This is reported by the British edition of Middle East Eye (MEE), citing three knowledgeable Saudi sources.
According to the information, Riyadh "at least for now" does not want to see Egypt in the agreement. This is due to the growing disillusionment with the Government of President Al-Sisi and the conviction that Egypt no longer represents its former strategic and military value.
Earlier, Ankara insisted on the inclusion of Egypt in the alliance. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called Egypt a "natural partner" and said that as soon as technical issues are settled, nothing will prevent Cairo from joining the bloc. According to some sources, Ankara has made significant efforts and officially invited Egypt to join the pact.
Official Cairo has not yet commented on this, and Turkey remains optimistic about the future accession of Egypt.
The Mecca Agreement on Joint Defense is a new defense alliance created on August 7, 2026 by the three leading Sunni powers: Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. The document on the creation of the alliance was signed in Mecca. Hence the name.
