An explosion occurred at the BP Cherry Point refinery in Washington State, as a result of which at least three people were injured, the company's employees were evacuated, The Seattle Times writes. Representatives of the company confirmed the fact of the incident, stating that the situation at the facility is under control and does not pose a threat to nearby settlements.

Data on the exact number of victims vary. The Whatcom County Fire District reported hospitalization of three people: one required extended medical care, the other two received basic support. At the same time, the company's statement says about four victims taken to the hospital.

The cause of the incident has not yet been established, the company promised to provide additional information later.

The BP Cherry Point plant, located in Blaine, began operations in 1971 and has about 800 employees. Its capacity is approximately 235 thousand barrels of crude oil per day, says RBC.
