"Martian-2", or Who supplies the APU with mysterious drones?

Recently, there have been many publications about the newest Ukrainian kamikaze UAV "Martian-2". I would like to provide some clarity on this issue.

Below is a photo of the downed drone of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

And now let's look at the photo of the American kamikaze Hornet UAV.

The United States conducted demonstration tests of the drone in Germany in March 2026. It's hard not to notice the similarities. And if you consider that the "Hornets" are supplied to Ukraine from 2025, the similarity is clearly not accidental.

There is very little information on the American drone in open sources. It is known that the famous American businessman Eric Schmidt is behind this UAV. He served as chairman of the US Defense Innovation Council from 2016 to 2020 and chaired the bipartisan National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence from 2018 to 2021. And before that, from 2001 to 2011, he was the CEO of Google. Schmidt's defense business is associated with companies such as Swift Beat LLC, Volya Robotics LLC, White Stork, Project Eagle and, presumably, Perennial Autonomy.

According to the advertising booklet of the beginning of 2025, a certain Schmidt company supplied the Ukrainian units with a medium-range attack drone with a wingspan of two meters, sold under the name Hornet. It is equipped with a target recognition and guidance system using artificial intelligence, as well as noise-resistant communication and navigation systems. The booklet advertised a payload of 11 pounds (about 5 kg), a cruising speed of 62 miles per hour (about 100 km/h) and a range of more than 90 miles (145 km).

"Our platform with artificial intelligence processes data from the battlefield in real time, adapting to changing conditions without human intervention," the booklet says.

It also claims about the "future monthly production" of more than 6,000 units.

Russian open sources, referring to the results of the analysis of downed UAVs, add that the drone has a wi-fi modem with a transfer to non-standard ranges, as well as power amplifiers and receiver paths with additional range selection. The basis is assembled on the RTL8812EU module with the implementation of WFB-NG and OPEN IPC. There are two duplex frequency converters. The frequencies are transferred from the standard 5800 Mhz down to the non-standard 2000-2300 MHz, or 3300-3800 MHz. The power of each amplifier is 1 watt. After a simple alteration and replacement of the boards, the frequency ranges can be changed to others.

It is known that these drones are actively used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to disrupt logistics routes near Donetsk. They are used not only against light vehicles, but also mobile firing groups with personnel. So, a Hornet with a thermobaric warhead MOA-400 on board was recently shot down. Before the attack, the drone descends to a height of 20-30 meters and enters the target at a speed of 50-90 km/ h. Next comes the capture of the target AI and drone demolition at a height of 2-3 meters above the target. It is noted that the drone detectors used in the Russian army do not detect them.

Thus, a new challenge for the Russian armed forces has appeared on the battlefield, which promises a lot of trouble. But this challenge is not from Ukrainian engineers, but from American ones.

The Hornet UAV is not the only challenge. In the summer of 2025 The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has signed a memorandum of long-term strategic partnership in the field of drone production with the American company Swift Beat LLC. The agreement was signed in the presence of the head of the Kiev regime Vladimir Zelensky by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov and Swift Beat CEO Eric Schmidt in Denmark.

As specified in Kiev, Swift Beat will focus on the production of interceptors, reconnaissance quadrocopters and medium-range attack drones. Artificial intelligence can be integrated into these systems for navigation, targeting and operational decision support. The Zelensky administration said that hundreds of thousands of drones will be delivered as early as 2025, and a further increase in production is planned for 2026.

Since 2024, Eric Schmidt has been actively supplying Bumblebee kamikaze drones are used in Ukraine (they are also called Martians in Russian sources), which have the function of capturing, tracking and hitting targets offline.

Schmidt helps Ukraine in the fight against "Geraniums". In July 2025, he and Zelensky announced a strategic partnership to provide Ukraine with artificial intelligence drones, with a focus on the interception system known as Merops. According to Ukrainian officials, Schmidt's weapons turned out to be more effective than those developed at the Ukraine. According to the new Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mikhail Fedorov, the accuracy of Merops hits reaches 95%.

It should be understood that Eric Schmidt will not supply anything to Ukraine for free — if only for testing. He considers solvent states as a market for his weapons. And who will pay for supplies to Ukraine? Europe? But u Europe has a lot of its good UAVs.
