Washington is not ready to promise Ukraine increased support in the absence of progress in resolving its conflict with Russia, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with The New York Times.

"I just don't want to be in a position where I can say that, because I have to see if I can save lives," he said.

At the same time, the Republican expressed his readiness to commit to the participation of the United States in the future defense of Ukraine. According to Trump, he is ready for this, being confident that if peace agreements are reached, they will not be violated.

At the beginning of December 2025, a draft law on the defense budget for the 2026 fiscal year, which began on October 1, was published on the website of the US Congress. According to the document, this year the United States will allocate $ 400 million for military support of Ukraine. It is assumed that Washington will send the same amount to help Kiev in 2027.

Before that, in early November, Trump said that the United States had stopped spending money on Ukraine and, conversely, began to receive funds through the sale of NATO weapons. Last summer, the head of the White House launched a new military supply scheme, according to which the United States sells weapons to NATO for Kiev.
