According to statistics reviewed by Reuters, German exports to the United States have declined significantly this year.
According to preliminary data from the German Statistical Office, in the first eight months of 2025, China overtook the United States and became Germany's largest trading partner, regaining first place amid rising customs duties that hit German exports to the United States.
According to Reuters estimates, the total volume of German imports and exports with China for the period from January to August amounted to 163.4 billion euros, while the volume of trade with the United States amounted to 162.8 billion euros.
The United States became Germany's main trading partner in 2024, ending an eight-year period of Chinese dominance. The change came amid Germany's desire to reduce its dependence on China, with Berlin citing political differences and accusing Beijing of unfair actions.
This year, the dynamics of trade changed again with the return of Donald Trump to the White House and the reintroduction of duties.
