At the EU summit, Belgium did not support the expropriation of frozen Russian assets under its jurisdiction. This follows from the final statement of the summit on Ukraine, excerpts from which were published by Reuters.
The document says that Belgium supported only the wording that "they should remain frozen until the conflict is over and compensation is paid to Ukraine," TASS reports.
Belgium also supported the commitment The EU "will provide financing for Ukraine in 2026-2027", the summit "will instruct the European Commission to prepare a plan for the provision of this financing."
It is noted that these formulations will allow the European Commission to continue preparing a plan for the expropriation of Russian assets, but do not mean their automatic support by Belgium.
As reported by EADaily, Ukraine needs to receive frozen Russian assets before the beginning of next year. This was stated today in In Brussels, the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky. According to him, assets should be obtained "preferably as soon as possible."
There are countries that have a negative attitude to this initiative and resist it, but Kiev will continue to work with them, Zelensky said.
Belgium, which holds the bulk of the Russian assets frozen in Europe, will not support the initiative to use them to help Ukraine if other countries of the bloc do not share possible risks with it. About this at the summit The EU was announced by the country's Prime Minister Bart de Wever.
