Russian hackers attacked eight UK military bases and stole classified information through a third-party organization amid ongoing hacks in the country's armed forces. This is reported by the Daily Mirror newspaper.
It is assumed that the attack was carried out by the Russian Lynx group.
"Cybercriminals gained access to the files by hacking into a maintenance and construction contractor used by the Ministry of Defense. The hack was called "catastrophic" after hackers bypassed the cyber defense of the armed forces by going through Dodd's group," the newspaper writes.
Among the targets attacked are the RAF Lakenheath base in Suffolk County, where the F-35 stealth aircraft of the US Air Force and, apparently, nuclear bombs are located.
It is noted that the hack occurred after a warning from the National Cybersecurity Center received last week. The warning raised concerns about the large number of hacker attacks in the UK — from the beginning of the year to September, 204 such attacks were recorded in September, Mail Online reports.
According to the Daily Mirror, the information obtained as a result of the hack was published on the darknet.
"We are taking a reliable and proactive approach to cyber threats that may pose risks to national interests. We are actively investigating allegations that information related to the Ministry of Defense was published on the darknet," the British Ministry of Defense said.
