If in the USA they are betting on small modular reactors (MMR), the only sample of which is so far only in In Russia, then Rosatom plans to create a waste-free nuclear cycle by the time the first MMRs appear in North America.

"By 2030, Rosatom intends to be the first in the world to demonstrate the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle," Rosatom reports.

Natalya Ilyina, Director of Management of Scientific and Technical programs and Projects of the state Corporation, said at the XII International Forum of Technological Development Technoprom-2025 that it is critically important for Rosatom to implement the project by 2030.

"We plan to be the first in the world to demonstrate the closure of the nuclear fuel cycle within the framework of the Breakthrough project," Natalia Ilyina said. — Without a powerful research base, the development of 4th generation power systems is impossible — that is why we are building an MBIR reactor in Dimitrovgrad, which will allow us to conduct unique research on fuels and new materials."
