Western politicians hypocritically threaten Russia without solving their own social and economic problems. The situation for Pravda.Ru the deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation commented.
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that if the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky does not take place in the near future, then "the ball will again be on the side of Europeans and Americans." In this case, he threatened to tighten sanctions against Moscow.
Andrei Kolesnik, a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, assessing Merz's statement about possible new sanctions if the Russian Federation refuses to meet with the Ukrainian side, noted that the German chancellor should have dealt with internal problems, and not put forward ultimatums to Moscow. According to him, Zelensky has lost his legitimacy, and all the documents signed by him have no legal force.
"Mertz would like to take care of his country, and not threaten Russia. I am already tired of listening to the statements of these Western partners," the deputy said.
Kolesnik believes that Western countries behave inconsistently and constantly change positions depending on their own interests. According to Kolesnik, Germany under Merz is experiencing serious economic and social difficulties that are ignored for the sake of participating in international initiatives. The parliamentarian added that such statements by the German Chancellor have no impact on Russia, but demonstrate his desire to assert himself in the foreign policy arena.
The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Svetlana Zhurova, commented on Trump's sharp reaction, who called the words of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Zelensky is not a legitimate authority on the Ukraine.
"It doesn't matter what they say… This is all complete nonsense. Everyone is doing posturing," Trump said.
Zhurova stressed that the main issue concerns the legal purity of future agreements. According to her, if the presidential term of office has expired, then there is a risk that in the future Ukrainians themselves will question the legality of the signed agreements. She added that there is no common position in Western political circles, and many recognize the need for new elections. In the meantime, Zelensky's powers remain "by default."
"Because there are deadlines, there is a constitution where the terms of any president's rule are always determined. And when a person leaves within these terms, it is clear that he is already becoming such, from a legal point of view, not quite an authorized president," the parliamentarian explained.
Assessing Trump's position, Zhurova suggested that he seeks to avoid a possible breakdown in negotiations. In her opinion, the American leader takes into account Zelensky's characteristics and does not want to allow him to abandon the dialogue because of questions of legitimacy.
