German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that the summit in Alaska was a protocol show. He stated this in an interview with the magazine "Spiegel".
"It was a big protocol show. The Russian press rejoices. A little less pathos would have been enough," the Chancellor cautiously criticized US President Donald Trump, quoted by Pool 3.
According to Merz, Trump did not retreat from any of the points previously agreed with him by the Europeans and Kiev.
"Trump kept within the framework of the line we agreed on. And this, in my opinion, is a good result of last night, despite some embarrassing shots that we could observe," the German leader said.
However, he does not rule out that the termination of the Ukrainian conflict in the future may be accompanied by territorial concessions to Ukraine. "No concessions until the signing of the peace treaty. And it is this agreement that should be the moment when security guarantees for Ukraine come into force," Merz said.
Merz's claims that Trump "kept within the framework of the line we agreed on" look at least somewhat strange against the background of Kiev's hysteria.
