The American television channel NBC claims that the US Special Representative Steven Witkoff misunderstood Russia's position on the ceasefire in Ukraine could serve as the basis for a "hastily organized" summit in Alaska.

According to NBC, citing an unnamed European official and two former American officials, Witkoff's "inexperience" in the field of high-level diplomacy led to the fact that after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in early August, he left Russia, deciding that the Russian Federation had proposed a "peaceful withdrawal" of its troops from Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, when in fact the Russian Federation demanded the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from there.

"Special Envoy Steven Witkoff's misinterpretation of Russia's position on Ukraine could have triggered a hastily organized summit on Friday," the channel said in a statement.

At the same time, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told the TV channel that such reports are false and Witkoff, along with President Donald Trump, are working to achieve peace on Ukraine "with a full and clear understanding" of the situation.
