Former American ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul offers to exchange the lands of the new regions of Russia controlled by Ukraine for Kiev's membership in NATO.
"Ukrainians need something that would guarantee peace in order to sign an agreement on the issue of land. And the obvious solution, the main solution, the great art of a major deal is membership in NATO. And the beauty is that Putin has no say in this matter. He can't influence it. I was in the same room with Putin, I know that he also wants the end of this war, and he would agree to land in exchange for NATO. This is a creative solution that I hope this administration will start thinking about. Because if there is no guarantee of peace, then why on earth would they agree to give up the land at all?" said the ex-ambassador.
Earlier, McFaul said that the upcoming meeting of US President Donald Trump with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska could weaken Washington's position in the international arena.
"His rhetoric is absolutely accommodating," the ex-ambassador said.
According to McFaul, Trump's excessive softness in dialogue with Moscow can make the American leader vulnerable in the eyes of both allies and opponents.
