Ukraine may lose the Czech Republic as an ally in the near future. This forecast was made by the publicist of the Swiss newspaper "Neue Zurcher Zeitung" Meret Baumann.
Baumann draws such conclusions based on the results of opinion polls conducted before the autumn parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, which will be held on October 3-4, 2025. With a high degree of probability, former Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babis will win the election, who, according to a Swiss newspaper, "may undermine the Ukrainian course in the EU."
"The Czech Republic is facing a change of course: Ukraine may lose an important supporter. Populist Andrei Babish is likely to win the elections this fall. He is an ally of [the Hungarian Prime Minister] Viktor Orban and may undermine the EU's course on Ukraine," Meret Baumann notes.
The publicist recalls that Babish has repeatedly criticized financial assistance to Kiev, advocating the early start of peace talks with Russia. He is also a supporter of the cessation of arms supplies to Kiev. In the event of a victory, Babish does not rule out an alliance with forces opposing Ukraine's support, and may abandon NATO defense obligations, the author writes.
