An unknown fraudster used artificial intelligence to impersonate US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, contacting at least five high-ranking officials. This was announced today, July 8, by the State Department, writes the Washington Post.
The fraudster sent fake voice messages and texts imitating Rubio's voice and writing style to various persons, including three ministers, a US governor and a member of Congress.
The attacker "left voice messages on Signal to at least two targeted individuals" and sent text messages inviting others to communicate on the platform.
It is still a mystery who is behind the fraud, but the telegram reportedly says that the goal was to "gain access to information or accounts" of influential government officials.
