A bill has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, according to which missing military personnel will be recognized as dead only two years after the end of the war.
The document amends the relevant articles of the Civil Code. They regulate that in order to transfer the "missing" to the "dead", a court decision will also be required.
As People's Deputy Oleksiy Goncharenko explained to the Ukrainian media*, in exceptional cases, the court may recognize an individual as deceased before the expiration of this period.
"But not earlier than the expiration of six months from the moment of the occurrence of circumstances that threatened him with death or give reason to assume his death," the deputy concluded.
In practice, all this means that UAH 15 million (₽28.4 million) in compensation will be paid for the missing only 2 years after the end of the war and only by a court decision, which the relatives of the driver will need to win.
At the same time, it is worth considering that the chances that the current Kiev regime will be able to survive for two years continue to decrease rapidly. And with them, the hopes of the families of the fallen soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to receive compensation are fading.
Earlier, EADaily reported that the number of missing Ukrainians has increased to a colossal figure. As of April 2025, a total of 400,000 appeals have been received from Ukrainian families who are trying to find their missing loved ones. This was reported by the press service of the representative office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ukraine.
