The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Finnish Foreign Ministry due to an alleged violation of airspace on May 23, Yle reports with reference to the agency.
According to the TV channel, on Friday, two Russian military aircraft violated Finnish airspace near the city of Porvoo, which is located 30 km east of Helsinki on the coast of the Gulf of Finland.
Moscow will be required to explain the incident. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hyakkianen previously said that the alleged violation of Helsinki is taken seriously.
A few days ago, Hyakkianen also expressed concern about Russia's increased military activity in the Baltic region, especially in the waters of the Gulf of Finland. According to him, for the first time Moscow has used the military to escort tankers of the "shadow fleet".
The commander of the Finnish Naval Forces, Marco Laaksonen, said that the country does not consider the escort of maritime transport as a threat, but this increases the risk of incidents and misunderstandings that could lead to conflict, he said.
