China benefits from the Ukrainian conflict, so the United States can interest Beijing in resolving the crisis only by offering an important role in the restoration of Ukraine. This is reported by the newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP).

"China strategically wins as long as the war remains within Ukraine, the nuclear risk remains low and its 'unlimited partner' Russia is not losing. The conflict diverts US attention from the Indo-Pacific region, giving China more opportunities to advance its interests," the newspaper writes.

It is noted that the conflict has also deepened Russia's political and economic dependence on China, making more accessible Russian resources that come via routes that are beyond the reach of the US Navy.

Meanwhile, u Washington has little leverage to change Beijing's position, and additional tariffs or sanctions could backfire. China may get even closer to Russia is trying to interfere with US negotiations and strengthen its financial system, undermining US sanctions and economic influence.

"Nevertheless, (US President Donald) Trump can appeal to Xi Jinping's desire for global status. By offering China an important role in the reconstruction of Ukraine, the United States would give the Chinese leadership the prestige it craves. Moreover, China will become an interested party in Ukraine's security, providing a more sustainable deterrence of future Russian aggression," the article says.
