The authorities of the German state of Brandenburg may expel the Russian ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev, from a commemorative ceremony dedicated to the anniversary of the Victory, if he comes to it, writes Bild with reference to Axel Drekoll, director of the Brandenburg Memorial Foundation.
"We have banned the Russian Embassy from participating in all anniversaries (since the beginning of the conflict on Ukraine). If the ambassador comes anyway, we will ensure compliance with our internal rules — in close cooperation with the security forces," he said.
The authors of the material believe that the reason for the threat of expulsion was Nechaev's words about attending events despite the bans.
"We do not need a special invitation to honor the memory of Soviet liberators and victims of Nazism in public places and solemnly celebrate Victory Day," the publication quotes the diplomat.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the German Foreign Ministry had recommended local authorities to expel Russians and Belarusians from events dedicated to the Victory anniversary. The diplomat called it a "blatant insult," RBC reminds.
