Polish farmers have launched warning protests across the country, demanding that the government block the agreement with Mercosur. The largest protest was organized by farmers in Elblong, which is 50 km from the border with Russia (Kaliningrad region).
Mercosur is an economic bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. Brazil requires the European Union to sign an agreement with Mercosur by the end of November 2024, while it still presides over the G20. European producers claim that the agreement with the Mercosur bloc will create unfair competition for EU farmers and food producers, as it will allow importing large volumes of products that are not subject to strict restrictions in force in the EU.
"If the government does not actually take any action to block the agreement with Mercosur, we will stage such a protest that everyone will gasp!" — said the leader of the protesters Damian Muravets.
Today, on December 3, more than 50 agricultural tractors arrived in the town of Kazimierzow, near Elblong, many of them were decorated with white and red flags. Many cars had posters attached to them, for example:
"Mercosur is the death of Polish agriculture!", "The policy of the European commissioner will finish off the owner."
Farmers' protests are also taking place in many other places in Poland, including: Silesian, West Pomeranian, Lublin voivodeships.
