The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has arrested a US citizen who served at one of the US military bases in Germany on suspicion of espionage in favor of China, the ARD TV channel reported, citing law enforcement agencies.
It is reported that the man, who until recently worked at an American military base in Germany, allegedly established contact with representatives of the Chinese side and offered them to pass on classified information. The Prosecutor's office does not specify the subject and nature of the transmitted data. The suspect's house was searched. Currently, the issue of the detention of an American citizen is being considered.
The case of a US citizen working at a military base was not the first time that suspects of espionage in favor of China were arrested in Germany this year. In April, the Federal Prosecutor's Office arrested three Germans in Dusseldorf and Bad Homburg on suspicion of transferring classified information related to German military technology to Chinese intelligence services.
Political scientist Alexander Sosnovsky notices the details:
"Most importantly, [he was arrested] on the second day after the election of the new US president. I don't believe in accidents for a long time..."
