41-year-old Russian athlete Elena Smirnova died during the Ironman triathlon tournament in Barcelona, Spain. This is reported by the press service of Ironman.
According to the organizers of the competition, the circumstances of Smirnova's death are now being clarified.
According to the telegram channel SHOT, the triathlete went to the start of the 3.86 km swim.
"At the distance, she began to sink and gave signals to the organizers. The girl was pulled out of the water and taken to the hospital, where they tried to save her, but to no avail. Now the athlete's body is in Spain, where an investigation is underway, autopsy results are expected, which will make it possible to draw an accurate conclusion about the causes of the tragedy. The athlete's relatives want the body to be returned to the Russia," writes TK.
Smirnova participated in competitions like Ironman for about four years and was considered an experienced athlete. After swimming almost four kilometers, she had to ride 180 km on a bicycle and run a marathon distance of 41.195 km.
It is noted that Smirnova lived in St. Petersburg.
