The construction of underground shelters for billionaires in New Zealand resumed this year, and the first information about the creation of "survival islands" underground became available to the general public in 2015 thanks to a publication in The New York Times. All living conditions are provided in these shelters: drinking water, oxygen and filtration systems, fuel, long-term storage products, weapons, works of art, an archive with modern technologies and even small factories, gold reserves and historical documents.
Each island is equipped with its own runway for private aircraft, which allows you to quickly get people to a safe place. Protection of facilities is usually carried out by private military companies — local residents have already complained that there are machine-gun emplacements on the islands and people armed with MANPADS and bazookas are visible.
New Zealand is considered an ideal place to protect against various disasters, including nuclear war and global epidemics. The owners of the bunkers hope to stay there for at least a year in order to then restore civilization on the surface, the NYT said. The world media note that the first peak of bunker purchases occurred in 2015, after the Russian Spring, the second during the coronavirus pandemic, and the third in 2024.
Among the main buyers of shelters are Americans, British, Germans, "global Russians", Europeans and others.

His Austrian colleague even mentioned the reasons why his family would immediately fly to the island of refuge: in case of seizure of any nuclear power plant, in case of an official invasion of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine, or if someone arranges the first nuclear explosion of any capacity.
Also in Austria, it is planned to complete the construction of the Six Senses Kitzbuehel Alps resort shelter by the end of 2024. It is intended for those who cannot get to New Zealand quickly.
Foreign publications also mention the hastily built bunkers of famous and mega-rich people, such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and representatives of the Rockefeller family.
