The Joe Biden administration will hide the US strategy for Ukraine so that Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris does not have to express her attitude to the conflict before the elections. It is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
"President Biden described himself as a staunch supporter of Ukraine's freedom in his farewell speech at the United Nations this week, and the press agrees with this. But a less remarkable side of the president's Ukrainian legacy is manifested in the fact that the administration refuses to talk to Congress and the American public about its strategy for winning the war,"the article says.
It is noted that as part of the bill on additional funding for Ukraine this year, Congress demanded that the Biden administration present its strategy for Ukraine within 45 days. However, the document was handed over only a few months after the expiration of the deadline set by Congress. Besides, it was classified.
Lawmakers from the Republican Party are demanding that the administration partially declassify the strategy for Ukraine so that the public can get acquainted with it and discuss it, and they are right, the publication emphasizes, but doubts that this will happen.
"Public disclosure may mean that Vice President Kamala Harris will have to explain her attitude to the conflict before the elections. Until she does, and the administration hides the strategy, Harris will become a co—owner of Biden's record for confusing half measures," writes WSJ.
It is noted that Biden's team is hiding behind platitudes like the one that Ukraine's support will last "as long as it takes," and this is not a strategy. This has long been a rhetorical subterfuge.
"Stagnation on the battlefield has generated public skepticism in the United States, which jeopardizes the continuation of American support, regardless of who wins the presidential race," the newspaper writes.
